Tai chi chuan or Taijiquan, often shortened to tai chi, taiji or tai chi in English usage, is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. It is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: its hard and soft martial art technique, demonstration competitions, and longevity. As a result, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims. Some of tai chi chuans training forms are especially known for being practiced at what most people categorize as slow movement. The Appreciation of Taiji Kung Fu consists of Taijiquan, Taiji Sword and Taiji Fan. Specifically speaking, it contains seven parts, those are 24 simplified Taijiquan, Yang 40 forms Taijjiquan, 42 Form (Competition Form) tai chi chuan, Yang 88 forms Taijiquan, 32 Taiji sword, 52 Taiji Kung Fu Fan and 56 beautiful sunset Taiji Kung Fu Fan.
The 24-posture Simplified Form of tai chi chuan, sometimes called the Beijing form for its place of origin, is a short version of Tai chi composed of twenty-four unique movements.
Yang family-style (Chinese: 楊氏; pinyin: yángshì) tai chi chuan (taijiquan) in its many variations is the most popular and widely practised style in the world today and the second in terms of seniority among the primary five family styles of tai chi chuan.
The 42 Form (Competition Form) tai chi chuan is the standard Wushu competition form which combines movements drawn from the Chen, Yang, Wu, and Sun styles of traditional Tai chi chuan (Taijiquan). It was created in 1989 by grandmaster Li De Yin for the Chinese Sports Committee. The 42-form has been subjected to criticism for being a hybrid form, but in actual practice it has received a lot of positive attention as well, for being a challenging, fluid form which loads the body with energy (qi). Today it is a popular form for competition as well as for personal health benefits.
Taijijian (simplified Chinese: 太极剑; traditional Chinese: 太極劍; pinyin: tàijíjiàn; literally "Taiji Sword") is a straight two-edged sword used in the training of the Chinese martial art Taijiquan. The straight sword, sometimes with a tassel and sometimes not, is used for upper body conditioning and martial training in traditional Taijiquan schools. The different family schools have various warmups, forms and fencing drills for training with the jian.
